Biography
Winner of the Muriel Taylor Cello Prize and the Making Music Award for Young Concert Artists, Adi Tal is emerging as one of the most dynamic young cellists of her generation. She made her solo debut at age twelve with the Israel Chamber Orchestra, and has since appeared as a soloist with numerous ensembles, including Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra- Durban, the Israel Philharmonic, Jerusalem Symphony, Haifa Symphony, and the Herzliya Chamber Orchestra, collaborating with conductors Daniel Boico, Thomas Sanderling, Aldo Ceccato, Dan Ettinger, and James Judd. She has performed at the BBC Chamber Proms at Cadogan Hall, Wigmore Hall, BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, National Concert Hall Dublin, Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Teatro Colón, Kölner Philharmonie, Berlin Philharmonie, Pierre Boulez Saal, Paris Philharmonie, Mozarteum Grosser Saal, Tonhalle, KKL Luzern, Elbphilharmonie, Beijing National Library Arts Centre and the Louvre Auditorium. Her solo and chamber music performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Singaporean Radio, and Israeli Radio, and she has recorded for Naxos, Meridian, NMC, Orange Mountain Music, Divine Art Records, and Resonus Classics.
Adi was a member of the acclaimed Fidelio Trio from 2014-2020. They were editor choice for Gramophone Magazine for the November 2016 Issue and shortlisted for the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Ensemble Award. The trio has toured the USA, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Singapore, India, Italy, Ireland, and the UK and has given chamber music lessons and masterclasses at Beijing Central Conservatory, San Fransisco University, NAFA Singapore, NYU, Tufts University Boston, and Royal College of Music in London. They are closely associated with some of today’s leading international composers, including Toshio Hosokawa, Charles Wuorinen, Johannes Maria Staud, and Michael Nyman. They are broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 3, RTÉ Lyric FM, WNYC, and NPR and annually present their own winter chamber music festival at St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra in Dublin.
Born in Israel, Adi began her cello studies at the age of seven with Hillel Zori. She received her Bachelor’s from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Richard Aaron, her Postgraduate Diploma from the Royal Northern College of Music as a student of Ralph Kirshbaum, and her Master’s from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a student of David Takeno.
She has performed at the Perlman Music Program, Ravinia Festival Steans Institute, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Verbier Academy, and Banff Music Festival, and she is a regular participant at Open Chamber Music, IMS Prussia Cove.
She has collaborated with such artists as Steven Isserlis, Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Leif Ove Andsnes, Yuja Wang, Lahav Shani, Ksenija Sidorova, Miriam Fried, Anthony Marwood, Nicholas Daniel, Guy Braunstein, Amihai Grosz, Boris Brovtsyn, and members of the Cleveland and Jerusalem Quartets. Adi is a regular member of Daniel Barenboim & West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and often performs with Camerata Tchaikovsky and Aurora Orchestra. She has won awards from the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, America-Israel Cultural Foundation, Ronen Foundation, and the Raphael Sommer Music Scholarship Trust.
Adi Tal plays a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini cello made in Parma, circa 1765, on loan from a Charitable Trust.
